How to get to Taghazout: From Marrakesh to the Atlantic Coast
Marrakesh, with its vibrant markets, labyrinthine souks and majestic mosques, is undoubtedly one of Morocco’s most fascinating destinations. However, for those who wish to get away from the hubbub of the city and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Atlantic coast, there is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered: the small town of Taghazout.
Marrakech to Taghazout by shuttle bus
If you’re not planning to rent a car, then I’ll tell you right now that to find out how to get to Taghazout easily and cheaply you’d better visit the Souk to Surf website. It is a shuttle service that leaves from different cities, and travels to different towns along the coast. The cost of the shuttle from Marrakesh to Taghazout is 25 euros, and for only 8 euros more you can add and transport your surfboard as well.
In general, more or less the cost is always around this price even if you decide to use the service between different destinations. I have taken the Souk to Surf shuttle several times and I absolutely recommend it: convenient, safe and always on time! It is definitely the best option if you want to move around Morocco comfortably without a car. The only problem is that places run out very quickly, especially if you start in Marrakesh. For this reason, I recommend that you book well in advance so that you can take advantage of the service. Remember that the shuttle also includes a stop at the airport, so if you land in Marrakesh you might be able to go to Taghazout on the same day. Until December 2023t, thedeparture time from the airport was around 3 pm, but you’d better always check on the website!
How to get to Taghazout by bus
If you are booking last minute and there are no seats on the shuttle, your only option is the bus. Unfortunately, there are no direct bus routes (yet) from Marrakesh to Taghazout; you will have to get off in Agadir (a city located about half an hour from Taghazout), and from there take a cab to your final destination (costs between 15 and 20 euros).
This is the website from which to see the bus schedule and, in case, make reservations. Bus tickets are very cheap and there are several departures throughout the day. This could also be an option in case you do not arrive in time for the shuttle from Marrakesh and want to get to Taghazout in the day anyway.
How to get to Taghazout by car
And as a last option there is always to rent a car (although not the cheapest!), or a van. Travel time is about 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Marrakesh, you need to take the N8 road heading west. You will pass through places like Essaouira and Imsouane before arriving in Taghazout. The advantage of traveling by car is just that: you have the freedom to stop along the way to admire the sights and make stops at traditional villages. As far as safety is concerned, you can rest assured in this respect as well: Morocco is not a dangerous country, and no one will bother you along the way!
In Morocco I met a Spanish girl who had arrived there in her van via the Strait of Gibraltar, and with her I made several stops on the Atlantic coast including beautiful Imsouane and other beaches near Taghazout. It was really a wonderful experience! Who says it couldn’t happen to you? 🙂
