Two Days in Ilha Grande: The Minimum I Recommend
If you’re short on time but don’t want to miss Ilha Grande, two days are enough to visit its most iconic attractions.
I recommend spending one full day at Lopes Mendes, widely considered one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches. You can reach it by boat followed by a short hike, or entirely on foot if you enjoy trekking.
On your second day, choose a private boat tour. My top recommendation is the private Lagoa Azul tour, which lasts around 4–5 hours and lets you snorkel in some of the island’s clearest waters while visiting beautiful, less crowded beaches without taking up your entire day.
How Many Days in Ilha Grande: Three Days Is The Perfect Length for Most Travelers

If someone asks me how many days in Ilha Grande, my answer is almost always the same: three days are the perfect balance.
With three days, I recommend this itinerary:
- One day at Lopes Mendes;
- One day for the Full Island Tour (Volta a Ilha), the island’s most famous boat excursion.
- One day exploring Lagoa Azul, ideal for snorkeling, crystal-clear waters, and relaxing on quieter beaches.
This is the itinerary I recommend to around 80% of my clients because it allows you to experience the island’s highlights without rushing from one attraction to another.
Four or Five Days: Experience Ilha Grande at a Slower Pace
If you have a few extra days, Ilha Grande will probably surprise you so much that you won’t want to leave (it happened to me, I originally came here on vacation and ended up living here!).
Besides Lopes Mendes, Lagoa Azul, and the Full Island Tour, you will have time to discover some of the island’s hidden gems.
Some of my favorite experiences include hiking to Dois Rios, one of Ilha Grande’s most fascinating beaches, where you can still visit the remains of the former prison that once housed some of the most dangerous criminals in the state of Rio de Janeiro. I also recommend visiting Praia Preta and the historic Aqueduct, as well as taking a boat tour that combines Lagoa Azul with three wild beaches, perfect if you’re looking for quieter, less touristy spots.
And that’s just the beginning. Kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, scenic hiking trails, and dozens of hidden beaches make Ilha Grande a destination where it’s almost impossible to get bored!
